Gods and Goddesses unite! This Golden Goddess Smoothie beckons us to come together for the purpose of loving, honouring, and cherishing our bodies, and giving them the magical nutrients they deserve.
This smoothie is packed full of medicinal Goddess goodness, and the flavour is so unique! Sweet, spicy, and everything nicey!
I am not normally one to write down recipes for smoothies. For me, the joy comes in throwing whatever I want into a blender, and seeing what comes out! I especially love the part right before blending, when I guess what colour the smoothie will turn. Although, to be honest, since I usually pack my smoothies with berries and greens, most of them result in varying hues of “baby poo green,” hahah.
But not this time! HO BAYBAH! The beautiful, vibrant orange colour of this Golden Goddess Smoothie makes me feel happier and healthier just looking at it!
I load this bad boy up with banana, mango, carrot, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, coconut milk, and almond milk. If you are trying to reduce sugar, feel free to swap the banana or mango for more carrots. Alternatively, if you fancy a sweeter, more dessert-like smoothie, add a tablespoon or two of maple syrup.
I like my smoothies creamy, but not too creamy, and loaded with fat and protein for staying power throughout the day. This is why I use a blend of full-fat canned coconut milk and homemade unsweetened almond milk. You, however, can use whatever plant milk you like best.
Let’s pass the mic over to Connie, our resident RHN, to find out about the powerful medicinal properties in this smoothie.
Ginger and turmeric, which are closely related, are among the healthiest and most delicious of spices. Ginger aids in digestion, and is a strong anti-nauseant. Both ginger and turmeric have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Consuming anti-inflammatory foods is vitally important, since studies show that almost all chronic, Western diseases share chronic inflammation as a common denominator. Curcumin, which is the main active anti-inflammatory ingredient in turmeric, is so powerful that it can mirror the effectiveness of certain anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side effects. The body struggles to absorb curcumin, so it is best to combine it with black pepper. Pepper contains piperine, a natural substance that drastically increases the absorption of curcumin.
This Golden Goddess smoothie makes an excellent breakfast or snack at any time of the year, but it is my winter smoothie of choice. The medicinal spices act as an immunity boost at a time when our systems are more vulnerable.
