Well gang, if you live in the Northern hemisphere like me, then you know that we are on the last leg of winter. And it seems no matter how happy we are, or how high we are vibrating, this is the time of year when it is almost inevitable that we’ll acquire some kind of sickness.
I, myself, came down with a wee cold the other week. It didn’t kick in Charlie’s Angels Full Throttle, but it definitely robbed me of most of my energy, and left me with a mild sinus headache. I use food as medicine, so I kicked up my intake of garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, and oil of oregano. However, I wanted to give myself an extra boost to get back to my bubbly, buzzing self prontisimo.
So, I grabbed all my potent healing spices out of the cupboard: ginger, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne, and cinnamon. Then I snagged fresh lemon juice from the fridge, some maple syrup, and threw it all in a jar. And behold, the wellness shot was born.
The concoction was sweet, spicy, zingy, and surprisingly tasty! I didn’t even have to knock it back like a regular shot. I just slowly sipped it and enjoyed the intense flavour.
Now, this recipe is definitely not for the sensitive palette. You might have to dial down the black pepper and cayenne, or increase the maple syrup to cut the heat. Or, just toss it back like a champ and chase with some fresh orange juice or a glass of water.
I took two of these wellness shots per day for four days, and absolutely swear by it. After drinking one, I instantly felt more vibrant, more alive, clearer in the throat and head, and ready to take on the day.
Now, let’s hear a word from our resident RHN, Connie Oickle, about the healing powers of each of these ingredients:
Turmeric, black pepper, cayenne, ginger, and cinnamon are some of the best spices we can introduce to our diets to prevent and treat sickness. They all have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and are loaded with antioxidants. Lemon juice is loaded with vitamin C, and may actually help break a fever by causing extra perspiration of the body. Lemons are also a diuretic, which help to flush bacteria and toxins from the body. Maple syrup has numerous antioxidants, and is a much healthier alternative to refined or artificial sweeteners.
Even if you aren’t horking up winter yuckiness right now, I highly recommend adding this wellness shot to your weekly routine for an amazing immune system super boost.
SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! ……….Ohhh, how the times have changed ;).
