Two of the most important things to me in life are truth and transparency. Ever since I was a kid, I loved breaking past outer appearances and diving into the core of what makes us human.
So, what does make us human?
There are many traits, but today I want to focus on two: fear and resistance. These are two of the major building blocks of what makes a human, and what constitutes life in this three-dimensional realm. Without fear and resistance, we transcend our bodies and this time-bound condition, and dissolve back into the eternal Cosmic soup.
Fear and resistance are Universal. When we realize that others fear, just as we do, it brings us closer together, for it reminds us that we are but different appendages on one giant Universal body. Resistance is born out of fear, and it creates our physical and mental boundaries around us, which we then perceive as our reality. Whenever we reach a boundary, we feel resistance. We feel physical boundaries as the walls that encase our house, and the muscles that encase our bodies. We experience mental boundaries as judgments, close-mindedness, stubbornness, and ignorance. Emotional resistance is felt through fear, jealousy, anger, hatred, and disgust. It is necessary that we feel each of these physical, mental, and emotional resistances, so we can know exactly where we have to push in order to expand our boundaries. And why do we want to expand our boundaries? So we can create more room in which to dance the ecstatic dance of life. =)
What is transparency?
Transparency is the ability to show what you are feeling and thinking, regardless of how you believe you will be perceived. To be transparent is to present yourself to the world, naked, palms open, saying, “This is me. This is the accumulation of everything that I have believed myself into being. I am the result of all of my past and current fears and my ability to comply with the conditions that were set in place before I arrived in this body.” When we are able to present ourselves to the world in a fully transparent way, we achieve the deepest level of connection with others, for we are exposing the deepest part of ourselves.
In order to present this vulnerable truth, we first have to transcend fear. We have to shed the lies we have told ourselves. Those lies being, “I am not beautiful. I am not smart. I am not good enough. I am not worthy.” When we re-arrange our belief system to reflect that which we ARE, which in entirety is something more beautiful and complete than anything that has been imagined into being, we feel confident to express our truth. We can be completely transparent with everyone we come into contact with.
The evolution of social media means that for those of us who can afford technology, there is a world we can immerse ourselves in that is so powerful, and yet so dangerous, because the majority of the content on it is perpetuated by those who are wearing social masks. Truth and transparency are hard to come by on social media, and the more we immerse ourselves in this technological soup based on falsities, the more our outdated belief system will be solidified by it. We think, “Look at that girl living an amazing life – all she does is travel and lay on the beach and drink tropical smoothies and take pictures of her gorgeous tanned self and her gorgeous tanned husband and their gorgeous tanned children. My life doesn’t look anything like that, so I must not be worthy of happiness.”
We can get sucked into an incredibly dark vortex if we succumb to the mask-wearing rabbit hole of social media. But what we don’t realize, is that at the core, the people presenting themselves in masks are just as confused and unhappy as we are. They conform to the conditions and belief systems that were forced upon them as children, and they show everyone just how well they have adopted those beliefs.
“Look at me! Look at me! I live in a large house and drive a fancy car! I have a beautiful wife, and I make so much money! I am the most successful! I am the winner!”
With these displays, people are really just searching for confirmation from others that they are indeed “the winner”. The confirmation perpetuates their belief that in order to be happy, they have to have all those things: the job, the money, the house, the car, the girl. And so the cycle of suffering continues.
We must remember that it is not our fault that we hold tight to these belief systems. They were instilled and drilled into us from the moment we emerged from the womb, and we are, in the grandest sense, just doing what we have been told so as not to upset or disappoint anyone.
Shedding The Skin
It is vitally important to remember that we have the POWER to change our beliefs. We can create our own set of rules of which to live by, by consulting our Intuition (our Heart) and listening to what FEELS right. When we allow our heart to be the sole judge that defines how we live, everything becomes easier. When we let TRUTH be the ultimate guiding light on our path, we feel at peace. We become satisfied, happy, eager, and excited. And most importantly, we become free.
My Personal Truth
It was one of my heart’s desires when I started this blog to be as transparent and truthful as possible. I, like anyone, love to look at beautiful things. That is why I strive to improve my photography all the time. It is an enormously creative outlet, and I am so proud of all that I have learned so far. At the same time, I do not want to project false ideals or beliefs. I want to be truthful in everything that I do, to remind others that behind this mask resides an Infinite Being who experiences fear and resistance, just like you.
One of my biggest fears, I have realized, is of success. True success. We are the sole creators of our reality, and we can make anything we want happen so long as we can visualize it and believe it. I have allowed myself to dream massive dreams, but I still experience the fear of some of those things manifesting in full form. Even though I envision the most beautiful future, it is unnerving to realize that in order to get there, I have to leave behind everything that was comfortable. Everything that was accepted as truth from the time I was a kid. Every idea, belief, and thought that I clung to. They are all layers of skin that I need to shed in order to grow into my fully-actualized self. And as we know, growth is not comfortable.
The more we desire to grow and change, the more discomfort we are bound to experience. And so, that is the fear I am currently working through. The fear of my infinite capacity to create and manifest. Why I am writing it here? Because in order to transcend fear, we first have to acknowledge it. Without acknowledgement, our fears will be stuck swirling in our bodies like goldfish trapped in bowls. It is only by acknowledging them that we allow them to move through and out of us.
And so, to honour my desire for transparency, I wanted to show you these photos that I took the other day while doing a shoot. Though you might have believed from the photos in my recipe posts that I live in some fancy house with white marble countertops, these photos show you the TRUTH.
I live in a 450 square foot cabin that was built in the 1970’s with my partner and our two big dogs. The rats have chewed through the insulation, which means we always have to keep a fire going in winter. A dehumidifier runs constantly to keep our clothes from going mouldy. The plumbing is finicky at best, and it takes me several minutes to find the “sweet spot” each day between scalding hot and freezing cold water in the shower.
Because my camera lens is slightly zoomed, I had to stand on top of my work desk, backed against a wall, just to get the rest of the room in the frame. This shoot was actually much tamer than others, as there are days when the entire counter is covered in props and ingredients, and the sink is overflowing with dishes.
I will continue to write more posts like this in the future, because just as easy as it is to remind ourselves of our true nature and all that connects us, so too is it easy to forget. I want to remind myself, just as much as I want to remind you, of the ties that bind us all. And greater than the ties of fear and resistance, are the ties of truth, transparency, and love.
Love Knows No Boundaries
The love I experience for this thing that I am creating continues to grow and evolve, and I want to say, yet again, how insanely grateful I am for each and every one of you who support me. Whether you have read a couple of my posts, tried one of my recipes, commented on a photo, or sent me words of encouragement and enthusiasm, you have supported me immeasurably. By doing so, you are simultaneously supporting and encouraging yourself to live a deeper, more meaningful life. I am honoured beyond words to stand alongside you, and to co-create the most amazing reality together. Without the “other”, the “I” becomes meaningless. It is because of all of you that I have found purpose in this lifetime. So, I thank you. I honour you, I cherish you, I love you, I adore you, and I thank you.
Until next time,
ALL my Love,
ALWAYS & Forever,
A special thank you to my cousin, Ryan. Your supportive response when I shared the idea for this post let me know that its time had indeed come. You are an amazing nurturer, and you are going to make an unbelievably incredible father in a few months time. =)
